Activism, in a general sense, can be described as intentional action to bring about social change, political change, economic justice, or environmental wellbeing. This action is in support of, or opposition to, one side of an often controversial argument.

The word "activism" is often used synonymously with protest or dissent, but activism can stem from any number of political orientations and take a wide range of forms, from writing letters to newspapers or politicians, political campaigning, economic activism (such as boycotts or preferentially patronizing preferred businesses), rallies, blogging and street marches, strikes, both work stoppages and hunger strikes, or even guerrilla tactics.

In some cases, activism has nothing to do with protest or confrontation: for instance, some religious, feminist or vegetarian/vegan activists try to persuade people to change their behavior directly, rather than persuade governments to change laws. The cooperative movement seeks to build new institutions which conform to cooperative principles, and generally does not lobby or protest politically.

How can I make history a meaningful career? How can activism fit in with history?
Q. I really enjoy history and would love to have a more scholarly career. However, it bothers me that a job history doesn't really imply a shaping and changing of the future, while I would like to have a more meaningful effect in working towards positive change. What are your opinions on the relevance of history and how it can be meaningful? Are there are any careers you can think of that would combine history and activism? (I am also not so much interested in studying activism)

A. There are plenty of would-be activists in the historical profession. They're the people who go to historical conferences and get on their soapbox. Academics who shriek and cast aspersions on everyone who presents arguments which differ from their own. For all the talk of passion, engagement and social justice that exists in the academy, the fact is that most activists make terrible historians. Sure, objectivity is impossible. Progress a delusion. But good historians are open-minded give all arguments a fair hearing. And beyond that, if you feel so passionately about certain causes, you'd be miserable in academia. As the last respondent pointed out, activism is far better suited to politics or the law -- jobs where your goal goes… [cont.]

What is the connection between moral character and political activism?
Q. Do you think there should be a link between good moral character and political activity?

A. I don't think there always is; you have many examples of moral and ethical politicians who have been brought down by scandals and indecent actions. Eliot Spitzer is the perfect example; powerful, very motivated and bulldog-ish on crime, yet fell because he had himself morally violated his wife's trust and illegally hired a prostitute. You have many people who have incredibly stories on their activism; Malcolm X was and continues to be one of my favorite figures in history, yet for half his life he hustled, gambled, and ran around with a crowd many would consider unpleasant. He admitted this, and despite his problems and continuing issues with dealing with his beliefs on Jews (he was slightly anti-Semitic, not horribly but did have a… [cont.]

What human rights related issues do you think require the most attention and activism at the moment?
Q. I need to create awareness events at my college but there are just too many issues going on that I do not know which need the most attention. If you have any ideas how I can present these issues in an engaging way around a school with 6000 people, please let me know. Thank you

A. Darfur. Worst spot in the world right now and the most horrific massacres still going on, carried out by a street gang known as Janjaweed.
