Does the break away region of South Ossetia and Abkhazia want to join Russia?
Q. Is it true that South Ossetia and Abkhazia will break away from Georgia and become part of Russia? Or will Russia only help them become independent nations? What is the current goal of Russia economically, politically, and militarily? Are they trying to become a global power?
Asked by Jonathan - Mon Jul 13 20:43:27 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Russia wants them to. And it is the stated goal of President Mededhev to create a multipolar world, thats mean creating a counter balance to American power and the destruction of NATO. Both sides are currently tied down from an open cold war conflict but it will occur and in the long run Russia's weaker than the U.S.S.R and America's stronger than it was in the last Cold War.

How is this idiot gonna force Abkhazia and Ossetia to become part of Georgia?
Q. If 99% of the population in those republics voted for full independence from georgia? By idiot I mean GWB. As for the whole world, I think people who live in those Republics should decide whether or not they want to become part of the Georgian criminal regime.

A. Don't you think you have idiotic ideas in your head? Abkhazia and South Ossetia was always Georgian territory! Should we condemn the hospitality of georgian people who let these people live in georgia? But don't forget, Chechnia and North Ossetia didn't belong to Russia according to the history!

Why is it ok for the West to recognize Kosovo but not for Russia to recognize Abkhazia and Ossetia?
Q. The Albanian Kosovans tried to break away from Serbia and the West bombed the Serbs and have just recognized Kosovo as independent. The Abkhazians and Ossetians tried to break away from Georgia and the West did nothing as the Georgians massacred them. Then when Russia intervened to help them ( many of whom hold Russian passports) , *they* became the "aggressor"?! The Georgian President has inflicted ruin on his nation through his military adventure. Why does the West not condemn *him* and not Russia?
Asked by Pastor Winthrop III - Tue Aug 26 18:25:08 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That's the double standards of the West. We should be used to it by now. The West is not going to condemn the Georgian president because the West and Georgia are on the same side. The US backed the actions of Georgia when they tried to take the South Ossetia capital, they US supplied weapons to Georgia and trained the Georgian military just weeks before the Georgian attack. From this many are saying that it's pretty obvious that the US gave the go ahead to the Georgians to take action. So why exactly would the West condemn the Georgian leader. He is their partner. Their friend. Their puppet.

Q. What benefit does Russia have in supporting separatist movements in Abkhazia and South Ossetia?

A. Russia's supporting its own citizens. There also has been a long conflict between Georgian and smaller nations on their territory (sometimes Georgians just tried to destroy them), so I guess it's just Ossetians and Abkhazians seeking protection, and since there are a lot of Russian citizens there, Russia should not deny them.

A. according to american mentality country should fight with each other for oil and gas only. but think - why do we need extra oil and gas if we have lots of our own? here in russia we don't economize electricity nor gas nor water like Europeans and Americans do. the reason why those two countries are so important to Russia is people. they are not Russians, but they are human beings like you and me. and when they are in danger and ask us for help shall we think at that moment about gas and oil? our hearts are rich enough so we can afford not to think about materialistic things.

Why didn't anyone stop the ethnic cleansing of Georgians in Abkhazia back in the 90's?
Q. I am beginning to understand why the Georgians hate the Russians so much .. apparently the Russians helped terrorists to equip, fund, and organise the killing, rape and torture of 30,000 Georgians in Abkhazia back in the 1990's. These terrorists subsequently overthrew (killed) the Georgian government of Abkhazia and are still in power today, and still funded by the Russians. Read here for more details: Warning, it is pretty gruesome and horrible. This would be like Cuba providing military support for terrorists in Florida, USA, so that Florida could become an independent country, independent of the USA. And then after independence is established Cuba starts moving a massive number of citizens into Florida. But instead substitute… [cont.]

A. yeah u are right Russia has ALWAYS supported the separatism in Georgia and provided the conflict zones with everything, even with weapons, and ALWAYS blackmailed Georgia they would admit the independence of those conflict zones,, this has been going for years! Russia using the name of peacekeepers had no limits, was allowed to do anything they wanted. if Georgia dared to say a word ot two they blackmailed us saying they r gonna give those conflict zones independence.. TJ its a lot complicated, Iran, oil, ,, all these things play its role ,, russia is still a powerful country , providing the Europe with fuel, energy and gas, so no1 wants to have a bad relationship with Russia

Why are Muslims so keen in helping Abkhazia?
Q. Especially Turkey?? As far as I know, about 60-70% of Abkhazia's population are Christians, while the rest (which is a minority) are Muslims. Turkey makes many websites hailing Abkhazia. Again, Sultan Sosnaliev, Shamyl Basaev, Iysuph Soslanbekov, Musa Shanibov, Salman Radoyev and Mahmud Gelaev were all Muslim warriors who were willing to sacrifice their lives for Abkhazia! What kind of Jihad is that??! Please explain...

A. South Ossetia and Abkhazia were recognized as being independent NOT as a solution to conflict. South Ossetia and Abkhazia were recognized as independent BECAUSE 90% of the population (according to referendums) wants it and were violently suppressed by the Georgian government.

Did Russia annex South Ossetia and Abkhazia?
Q. After the war Russia gave them independence but didn't they basically and illegally annex both of them?
Asked by aciaman - Sun Apr 25 19:21:27 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The situation of South Ossetia and Abkhazia neatly demonstrates the problems of breaking up an empire. For the Georgians they were getting independence from Russian, for the non-Georgian populations of South Ossetia and Abkhazia they were getting another set of masters they disliked much more than the Russians. If self-determination means anything at all then these two peoples had as much right to choose to re-join Russia as the Georgians had to break away. Although the South Ossetians and Abkhazians have a great deal of shared history with Georgians, and have both at times been part of Georgian kingdoms they have maintained a separate identity. In the case of the Abkhazians their Muslim faith made them quite distinct. Russia had its own… [cont.]

Q. Especially considering that they recognise Kosovo as independent.

A. Because Russia will annex them, that's why. You seemed to miss the fact that Russia has been parading around other countries, including the Ukraine handing out Russian passports in an effort to get the citizens to allow them to be reabsorbed back into Russia. Has any "Western" country done that with Kosovo? Um, no. Check your facts, what passports do the citizens of GEORGIA (Abkhazia and South Ossetia) hold? Russian. How independent is that? Hate the US all you want, but at least make intelligent arguments.

Q. What effect, if any, would this outcome have on the relationships between Russia and the US and the Caucasus region? Hey guys, I do not get it. Why are you talking about Poland and Ukrain? As I know Ukraine and Poland have no republics inside their territories. The problem with Georgia is that georgia has three republics on its territory that want to get separated from Georgia. As I know Romania claims that Moldova is its territory. While it was its territory 200 years ago. I do not think this even worse of mentioning here. worth mentioning here, sorry

Q. Where is "Abkhazia" located ? Why is it an disputed state ?
Asked by RAVIKIRAN - Fri Sep 18 23:01:52 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Abkhazia is a disputed region on the eastern coast of the Black Sea. Since its declaration of independence from Georgia in 1991 during the Georgian Abkhaz conflict, it is governed by the partially-recognized Republic of Abkhazia. Georgia considers Abkhazia part of its territory and has designated the province, in its official subdivisions, as an autonomous republic, bordering the region of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti to the east. On 28 August 2008, the Parliament of Georgia passed a resolution declaring Abkhazia a "Russian-occupied territory." However, this declaration is greatly disputed by several bodies and individuals who claim that Georgians have done their best to divert the history of the region and to claim it as their own. Is Putin bluffing that military aid to Georgia is a declaration of war?
Q. Moscow has issued an extraordinary warning to the West that military assistance to Georgia for use against South Ossetia or Abkhazia would be viewed as a "declaration of war" by Russia. The extreme rhetoric from the Kremlin's envoy to NATO came as President Dmitry Medvedev stressed he will make a military response to US missile defence installations in eastern Europe, sending new shudders across countries whose people were once blighted by the Iron Curtain. And Moscow also emphasised it was closely monitoring what it claims is a build-up of NATO firepower in the Black Sea.

A. It is an appropriate, realpolitik response to GWB's assinine foreign policy over the last eight years that has the entire world on alert and paranoid that the Village Idiot in the White House has no grasp of basic notions of action-reaction, cause-effect. When you build a pattern over the course of two terms as President of resorting to military force rather than diplomacy, you are likely to encourage people to arm themselves and target you and your allies.
