Q. How do you adopt a road? Are there civic organizations or individuals in your community who have adopted roads for cleanup? How does a person or organization qualify to adopt a road? What procedures are followed during clean-up? (How often does clean-up occur, how are the workers protected from traffic along the roadway, what do they do with the garbage they collect, etc) If civic organizations or individuals don t adopt roads, who does the cleanup, and how is it paid for?

A. I think it depends on which county's road you want to adopt. Each government agency has different requirements, but for most "adoptions," it's really a matter of keeping it clean. Here's some information from King's County's (Seattle, WA) Adopt-A-Road program: About the Adopt-A-Road Program The King County Adopt-A-Road Program is a litter-reduction campaign designed to remove litter and debris from county roads and improve the quality of the environment. The first Adopt-a-Road cleanup took place in September 1991. Since then, 185 groups now participate in this effort to cleanup county roads. The program establishes a partnership between volunteer groups and the King County Department of Transportation Road Services Division by working… [cont.]
