How can radio waves continue to travel for ever in outer space?
Q. How can radio waves continue to travel for ever in outer space? On earth the radio waves from your favorite radio or TV station will only go 100 miles or so at the very most, but NASA and Astronomers say that they will travel almost for ever, or at least Billions and Trillions of miles with out stopping. How is that possible?

A. Voyager 1 is so far from Earth in 1998 that it takes 9 hours 36 minutes for a radio signal traveling at the speed of light to reach Earth. Voyager's signal, produced by a 20 watt radio transmitter, is so faint that the amount of power reaching NASA's antennas is 20 billion times smaller than the power of a digital watch battery. Think that they will eventual fade into the noise of background radiation. We don't know if our signals can leave the Sun's magnetic heiloshpere

What radio stations are there that play classical music?
Q. I live in Florida and I love classical music but I always have trouble finding them on my radio. What classical music stations are there that I can listen to on my radio?

A. There are radio station locator sites, like that will tell you what is available in your are. But when I visit So. Florida every winter, from here in NY - I am struck by entering a wasteland of very little decent classical music - and a WHOLE lot of absolutely crazy, late-night far-right-wing ranting radio talk shows! I usually can find a NPR repeater - but I listen thru the night (Id o not l sleep well in hotels . . ) with headphones, and sometimes am stuck with Canadian all-news ( there's an auditory soporific!) or BBC news - ditto. You might discover that your mp3 player is your new best friend - especially at night. Added - since you said *radio*, I did not mention streaming - which is a GODSEND. You need never listen to 4am… [cont.]

What is the difference between HD radio and satallite radio?
Q. For his birthday, I would like to buy my boyfriend one of these two types of radio for his car, but what is the difference? What is better? I think he would enjoy the different radio stations not available on regular radio, can I get that on both? I am electronically "dumb" and would appreciate any advice from the savvy.

A. omg. i got a satellite radio and i love it. i got the silhouette 2 from sirius and i love it. it's also portable! it cost about $325.00 plus you want to have it professionally installed. you get all different types of music comercial free. it's about $13.00 a month for subscription. i love mine! also, you keep your regular radio. that's what it comes through. so if you want to listen local you can.

Is my radio new enough that my Sirius with work with it wirelessly?
Q. I have a 98 Grand Prix with the factory cd player & radio. I haven't installed anything yet but was wondering if I was going to need a wire connection to my radio or if the wireless will work. Also will my magnet antenna work on my front windshield? I assume it will but with less quality reception.

A. Your radio will be fine with the wireless fm signal that comes from sirius units but nobody gets good sound from using that. Definitely buy the optional RF Modulator to get a direct line into your radio for the true digital sound. Its only like $30 but sounds 100 times better. And if you're talking about your sirius antenna on your windshield it will sound perfect, thats where mine was on my grand am.

What is the radio fuse labelled in a 2004 chevy malibu?
Q. i have a 2004 malibu and my radio seems to be broken because it keeps saying check disc. the motor that ejects the disc keeps running and kills my battery. i have checked both fuse boxes but i don't know what the radio fuse is labelled. any help is appreciated.

A. The radio fuse is marked "Radio" and is a 10 amp fuse located in the Body Control Module which is on the passenger side front of the center console, where the passengers left foot would rest. The trim panel pulls off, and the BCM is behind it.

What makes a radio select and hold a specific frequency?
Q. My cars antena broke (the kind that goes up when you turn the radio on). Replaced it but when I turn the radio on and the antena comes up I get service but I'm unable to select and hold a station. I get every station in range and all at once. Just curious why that is.
Asked by Karen R - Fri Jul 7 14:36:33 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It is possible that there is a tuning capacitor at the back of your radio that needs to be adjusted to match the antenna to the radio input circuitry. If this match is not done, you may be picking up signals that are spurious. Check either your car's manual or the instruction book that came with your radio to find out if there is a tuning control like this on your set.

How to change the frequency of a radio transmitter?
Q. My radio doesn't receive a signal from my radio transmitter, because it transmits at 900 MHZ; which is too high for a radio to receive. I know i can just buy one, but this one has 300 ft range, and i like modifying things myself. SO, please help me. and make it simple. Websites with tutorials are appreciated.
Asked by dead sea - Tue Dec 8 22:53:40 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. What are you trying to do? Control an R/C car, boat or airplane? What is this transmitter? 900 MHz sounds like a public service two-way radio. However, these radios have more than a 300 ft range. A 300 ft range would sound like a R/C transmitter but there aren't any that work at 900 MHz. I will assume you are are trying to control an R/C thing-a-ma-jig. R/C receivers work at 27 MHz, 72 MHz, 75 MHz or 2.4 GHz. If your R/C transmitter works in the same band as your receiver, you can change crystals in both the receiver and/or transmitter, fairly easy. If you like modifying radio gear, get an Amateur Radio (Ham) License. You are allowed to build, experiment with and modify all the radio gear you want! Hams also use their gear for R/C.

What is the most popular radio production software?
Q. I am starting a radio production course this year and I want to get some experience using the software that is used in radio stations for cueing the music and ads, and for talk over etc. Anyone have any ideas what the most popular software is?
Asked by Andrew M - Tue Jul 14 10:58:27 2009 - - 1 Answers - 2 Comments
A. You need to visit a radio station because your idea of what is used in broadcasting is about as far from reality as it can get. Radio stations have used basically the same equipment for 50 years or more... a mixing board, turn tables, tape record and playback decks and a whole assortment of audio sweetning equipment.. they aren't doing it at home on their PC... they are using, in some cases, State of the Art recording equipment... but at the other end of the scale.. out in the midwest... they don't even have the basics, since their programming comes in by satellite.

Using a CB radio to communicate with two way radio, is it possible?
Q. I'm a security guard and we use two-way radios for communication but I'm going to be getting a CB radio and was wondering if it's possible to use it to talk to a two way radio. Like would it be the same frequency or the same channel as on the two way? Thanks.

A. I would suggest the GE SuperRadio III. Amazon has them and I've occasionally seen them in RadioShack Stores. They don't look like much, but having used one in the past and comparing it's performence to my top-quality Sangean ATS-909 reciever. The AM reception is unreal..picking up stations hundred of miles away with little effort and using the internal antenna (milage varies on location) They can be had for about $45.
