Activism consists of intentional action to bring about social, political, economic, or environmental change. This action is in support of, or opposition to, one side of an often controversial argument. In contemporary use, "activism" tends to be a word associated with the actions and ideologies of those on the political left. The word "activism" is used synonymously with protest or dissent, but activism can take a wide range of forms from writing letters to newspapers or politicians, political campaigning, economic activism such as boycotts or preferentially patronizing businesses, rallies, street marches, strikes, both work stoppages and hunger strikes, or even guerrilla tactics. In some cases, activism has nothing to do with protest or confrontation. Some religious or vegetarian/vegan activists try to persuade people to change their behavior directly, rather than persuade governments to change laws. The cooperative movement seeks to build new institutions which conform to cooperative principles, and generally does not lobby or protest politically. You have to know your stuff, because people who don't agree with you will challenge you, and you want to be able to give them educated answers. Answered by InMyOpinion - Sat Oct 28 15:36:09 2006 What is the best form of gay rights activism?
Q. There have been so many ways to fight for LGBT rights. The equality march on Washington, for one. Colleges have been holding kiss-ins in which gay couples gather and celebrate a public kiss with their significant other. Movies like Milk and Prayers for Bobby and Brokeback Mountain have furthered LGBT causes. And of course, there are flyers, parades, gay days at amusement parks, and many other events that display and support the gay community. Which one is the best and most effective do you think? Asked by Moo!!! - Wed Oct 28 13:15:10 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. All of these things together have furthered the LGBT cause. Many people were offended when Barney Frank told those who gathered in DC for the national equality march that they would only be putting "pressure on the grass" but he was partially true. We need to use our system of government to also further our cause. Currently, there is a bill to overturn the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which would be a milestone in gay rights. It needs only 36 more co-sponsors for it to be eligible for a vote in the House. Many Representatives like Nancy Pelosi would certainly co-sponsor the bill if only they had the pressure from our community to do so. Find out if your representative has co-sponsored the bill, if not, meet with them and request… [cont.] Answered by unknown - Wed Oct 28 13:31:15 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Activism" SOCIAL MEDIA: Online
