A trade union (British English) or labor union (American English) is an organization of workers who have banded together to achieve common goals such as better working conditions. The trade union, through its leadership, bargains with the employer on behalf of union members (rank and file members) and negotiates labour contracts (collective bargaining) with employers. This may include the negotiation of wages, work rules, complaint procedures, rules governing hiring, firing and promotion of workers, benefits, workplace safety and policies. The agreements negotiated by the union leaders are binding on the rank and file members and the employer and in some cases on other non-member workers.

Originating in Europe, trade unions became popular in many countries during the Industrial Revolution, when the lack of skill necessary to perform most jobs shifted employment bargaining power almost completely to the employers' side, causing many workers to be mistreated and underpaid. Trade union organizations may be composed of individual workers, professionals, past workers, or the unemployed. The most common, but by no means only, purpose of these organizations is "maintaining or improving the conditions of their employment".

Over the last three hundred years, many trade unions have developed into a number of forms, influenced by differing political objectives. Activities of trade unions vary, but may include:

  • Provision of benefits to members: Early trade unions, like Friendly Societies, often provided a range of benefits to insure members against unemployment, ill health, old age and funeral expenses. In many developed countries, these functions have been assumed by the state; however, the provision of professional training, legal advice and representation for members is still an important benefit of trade union membership.
  • Collective bargaining: Where trade unions are able to operate openly and are recognized by employers, they may negotiate with employers over wages and working conditions.
  • Industrial action: Trade unions may enforce strikes or resistance to lockouts in furtherance of particular goals.
  • Political activity: Trade unions may promote legislation favorable to the interests of their members or workers as a whole. To this end they may pursue campaigns, undertake lobbying, or financially support individual candidates or parties (such as the Labour Party in Britain) for public office.

What can the trade unions do in the present economic downturn to create jobs for their members?
Q. The trade unions seem to be very clever and extremely capable, at least they sound as though they have the answer to every industrial problem in their back pocket. . That being the case why don't they direct their tremendous wisdom and rhetoric to creating more employment for the nation and wealth for their members. Or is it a case that they just talk a good fight and try to bully employers when times are good but go and hide under the bed when the going gets get tough?

Why do the unions get 8 years before their Cadillac health care plans will be taxed?
Q. Is 8 years long enough to repeal it in some back room? And to those of you that say it has something to do with union labor contracts: Unions cant use contracts to evade taxes. In other words you and I can write a contract between each other but the government is not bound by that contract in any way.

A. The only contract that affects the health care tax break for the unions is the promise of special preference from the Democrat politicians for union support. Makes you wonder how that makes the average non union Democrat feel. He gets to pay the tax for supporting Obama & Company while the unions get a tax break for that same support. There is nothing that makes sense about the health care plan, why ten years of taxation for four years of coverage? If it is to save that much money to the economy, it should go into effect immediately.

How do you think that perceptions of unions have changed over time?

A. Once upon a time, people worked long hours in unsafe conditions. Unions came.. forced new labor practices into place and eventually "labor laws" replaced "practices" and now all workers in the US are afforded protection by law to safety provisions and rest/food breaks and fair compensation. Today, unions have abused their influence and continued to make DEMANDS from companies to the point that US companies can no longer compete in an emerging global market place. Companies flee the US, factories close, and American production has been so weakened, it should be considered a National Defense concern. Unions have outlived their usefulness.
