How many people will die if the new swine flu (H1n1) were to mix with the bird flu (H5N1)?
Q. This new swine flu, as we saw recently in Australia, can go from a human to a group of pigs. This new virus will, no doubt, eventually MIX with the well-established bird flu (H5N1), mutating into a killer virus that is easily transfered from human-to-human. How many humans will die in the process?

A. I'm not too sure my predecessors here are accurate in their assumptions, or understand how much of an issue this really is. What you are describing is called "reassortment". When an influenza virus enters a host already infected with an influenza virus, there is the possibility the two strains can reassort and create a new (or novel) strain. This has occurred in the current novel H1N1. Of great concern is the possibility of this virus, which infects humans easily but is not very deadly, reassorting with H5N1 (Avian Flu) and creating a very deadly strain of influenza that can easily infect humans. I have read some reports that suggest the Spanish Flu of 1918 had a similar evolution, and it is reported to have killed between 20 and 50… [cont.]
