Is it possible to make a satellite dish signal distorted?
Q. I was wondering if it's possible to distort a satellite signal by doing something to the satelite dish? Someone suggested shining a laser light at but, it doesn't seem to work. I want to do something to the satellite dish so that the signal going to the TV distorts however, it has to be something that won't damage the dish... any ideas?

A. Nope...it's a Digital signal all the way from the transmitter to the reciever box in the home... Stuff aluminum foil over the head, and you'll hack off the owner.. Hang icicles from Christmas over it, and say "you been having snowy reception recently?" The whole point is to use metal to interfere with the signal strength...

Will the digital switch in February produce a better satellite signal?
Q. I currently have satellite, but I only have my HDTV hooked up with a coaxial cable. I don't plan to buy HD programming or get a new satellite receiver anytime soon. So I was wondering if the digital switch in February will produce a clearer signal via coaxial cable from my satellite. Thanks.

A. The signal from the satellite to your satellite receiver is already digital. That's how both satellite systems work. Even if they didn't, the digital transition in the U.S. in February only affects those with (a) old analog TVs and (b) over-the-air antennas. Cable and satellite customers are not affected at all.

A. it could be the weather as they said or you may have to reset the box and smart card if you have one. sometimes they seem to get a bug and need to be turned off, card pulled out ,restart and replace the card . somehow this resets the box...had to do it once on my old box.

Can I get Eutelsat Hot Bird 7A satellite signal in USA?
Q. If not, is there another satellite that could give me signal/channels like Hot Bird 7A?
Asked by Bodzio - Mon Nov 10 13:30:27 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Hotbird 7A consists of Italian , Polish , and Islamic/Arabic programming , the coverage zone is for Europe only , so you are out of luck for this satellite in the USA. The satellite that most resembles Hotbird 7A in the U.S. is Galaxy 25 @ 97.0 west , the programming is from all over the world , you can subscribe to the encrypted channels using a Globecast receiver , those channels do include a few from Poland and 1 religious channel from Italy . Up to about 1 year ago Intelsat 3R offered 6-7 Italian channels FTA , but the service has been abandoned and no further information is available. If you're interested in Globecast World TV here is a link

Moving satellite receiver to downstairs, what should I do to acquire signal.?
Q. I recently moved my Satellite receiver from upstairs to downstairs and now its giving me the "Acquiring Satellite Signal" attention box, I was wondering if it should eventually find the satellite, and if so how long? Otherwise is there anything I can do to find it, and if not, Should I call them and schedule a technician to come fix it?

A. as long as you didn't move the dish, the receiver will find the signal shortly. Double check the connections and make sure they are ok

Why am I getting no satellite signal, but the tv's downstairs work fine?
Q. I've been trying to watch tv all day, but it's been really windy. Now there are no clouds in the sky and the wind has died down, but it still just says "Searching for Satellite Signal. (771)" So what's wrong with it and what can I do to fix it. I'm so freaking bored. Oh, my mom's tv downstairs is working fine, by the way. I can't... obviously, or I wouldn't be asking.

A. It can be few things wrong with your installation. first check the connectors from the wall plate to your receiver. if the dielectric (white fiber in between the copper stinger and the foil shield) has sucked in. go outside and make sure all your connections are still intact and there is no ''suck in''. to fix the suck in problem grab some needle nose pliers and grab the copper stinger and pull it out to where the dielectric is even with the bottom of the connetor. make it flush with it. if all your connections are good red button reset the reciever. the red button is located inside the access card door. if that dosent work then do a force download. red button reset, then as soon as the ''hello your directv reciever is starting up'' screen… [cont.]

Can I use TiVo in an apartment building that splits its satellite signal?
Q. I've been scanning the TiVo web site but can't find the answer. I don't have my own receiver because the signal is split all over the building or something. I believe it's DirecTV. I just have a cable cord that plugs into the jack in the wall and into my tv. Thanks!

A. I assume you have a coax cable going directly into your tv and you use the tv tuner to change channels? In that case, yes you can use a tivo. It also has coax connectors as well as composite and s-video. The tuner in the Tivo will work the same as your tv's tuner.

What's the name of Bush's act signed that says it is legal to catch a signal if you own satellite equipment?
Q. There is this equipment, PANSAT, that you can use to catch satellite signals. I am inquiring to see if this is legal. What is the name of the act? Is it legal??

Q. i get my local channels over the air from my rooftop antenna, not the satellite.
Asked by lab nerd - Sun May 25 20:46:44 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. For satellite signal, you must have a separate set-top box. As long as the converter and the old set-top box are connected on separate inputs (and you did not disconnect it by accident), you should be able to get both signals. Make sure you switch the TV inputs of course as needed. Of course, one wonders why did you spent money for a converter box if you have already a set-top box...

what does the satellite tv signal comprise of and how does encryption work for millions of receivers?
Q. I have read the signal has compressed and encrypted channels, but wondering if they come down as 1 digital stream, or at diff. frequencies? A. This is a pretty huge question to be answered here. I'll try to hit the high points. Yes, there are multiple frequencies. Each satellite has channels that are a finite size and can carry a finite amount of data. So, to add capacity, they must use multiple channels. When a satellite is full, they start on another satellite. Within each transponder (channel) there is one data steam with multiple services (programs or sub channels). These are usually DVB signals so you can look that up for all the detailed information. As far as encryption goes, each receiver will have it's own unique name. A data table in the stream will contain the authorization codes for a particular receiver. That's how they can turn specific receiver on or… [cont.]

I want to know how we can calculate the time taken by a signal to be transmitted from earth to the satellite?
Q. For eg. we r watching the live telecast of any event in the world on tv so how much time wud the signal from satellite take, from & back to the earth. If there is any special formula plz tell me.
Asked by Sportsnut - Sat Feb 24 14:05:23 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The signals are transmitted at the speed of light .. 186,000 miles per second. Let us imagine a satellite at 10,000 miles from earth in synchronous orbit. (always in the same place relative to a point on earth. The signal is travelling out & back = 20,000 miles. 20,000 186,000 = 0.1075 seconds. A formula of sorts would be: - (Distance of satellite x 2) 186,000 = seconds for transmission out and return.

A. Most dish companies will do the setup for free. If your company is not one of them, well, you use the dish. There should be detailed setup instructions from your dish company. If you don't have them, you might find them on the web. You should know the general area of the sky for the satellite you need. Depending if you moved to a new city this can be higher or lower in the sky than your previous setting. You'll need someone watching the TV with the dish receiver in setup mode. It will show the received signal strength. You will very gradually move the dish (and I mean very gradually) and find the point that gives you the best signal strength. Remember that a 1/16th on an inch move on the dish means a huge distance when extended out to… [cont.]

A. What you need is a Satellite Finder Tool with a Signal Meter and also use a Compass. This is how installers quickly find the satellite signal from where the satellite is mounted. Here is a link to an ENDED ebay auction just so you can see what it is and how they work. I hope this helps..
