How do you replace the turn signal on a Volkswagen Passat?
Q. I have a 1999 Volkswagen Passat and broke the turning signal in a small fender bender. I want to replace the turning signal, but can't find any screws to take the broken signal out. Does someone have experience working with Volkswagens?

A. I assume you are talking about front turn signal - if so there is a spring with the hook inside that holds it - look from inside, you will see it.

What is the best way to enhance signal pickup from wireless router?
Q. My girlfriend has a laptop that she tries to pickup signal from other houses around her neighborhood. The problem is that the signal is very low, and comes and goes while using it. Is there anything she can do to enhance the ability of her internal wireless card to pickup more signal? Thanks! Note: the signal is from a neighbor who is a family friend. She has permission from the family to use the bandwidth.

A. Since they allow her to use it, perhaps they could also be willing to help her. Put foil behind the base antenna like a satelitte dish pointing toward your house. Of course, this may degrade signal stregnth on the other side of the foil.

A. Laptops are more difficult, but if you have a desktop computer (that has a removable wi-fi antennae on the wi-fi card) you can make some pretty good DIY antennae that pick up a stronger signal than the one hidden down the back of your computer. A simple DIY modification is to add a length of cable so the antennae can be moved from being fixed to the back of the computer to a place with a better signal. There are also various designs all over the internet for complete custom aerials that pick up weak signals better, are more directional, etc. Some people claim you can also make simple parabolic dish signal boosters out of a bit of folded paper! Have a google around. I'll post some links if I come across any good ones. Also, some routers (i [cont.]

Can taking a bootleg satellite signal really be considered illegal?
Q. This question is concerning law and bootlegging satellite signal. I can understand if someone gets fined for stealing Cable TV because in order to do so they would have to physically take a wire that they do not own, and re-direct it on to their property. However, satellites are very different. Satellite signals are being blasted down on to our houses whether we like it or not. How can we call it "stealing" a satellite signal if all we're doing is collecting a signal that is already being blasted at our houses? So can anyone actually get charged for stealing a satellite signal? Perdendosi That's an interesting point, but I don't think decrypting cell signals are is the same as Sat waves. Physics, How to determine a signal from the intensity of light from a desklamp?
Q. A pair of students measure the intensity of light from a desklamp in Sec. 4.5 of the experiment. When the detector is 25 cm from the lamp, the signal measured by the detector is 0.74 V. How large a signal (in V) do the students expect when the detector is 39 cm away?

A. Light falls with the square of the distance from source. Call the strength at the source S Assume that the detector is accurate and linear. .74 = S/(25*25) ---(1) x = S/(39*39) ---(2) Rearrange (1) S = 0.74*25*25. Substitute into (2) x = (0.74*25*25)/(39*39) solve x = 0.304 V

Q. We have the aerial signal coming into the front room, and a wire underneath the house taking into the bedroom. How to get a good freeview signal with my TV aerial?
Q. Been trying to get a good signal for freeview but does not work! Bought a new 32 elements aerial it seems to work fine at the begining but once we touched the aerial to adjust it we lose all signals and it seems impossible to get it back! When adjusting the aerial do you need to reset the box every time?
Asked by Margaux - Thu Feb 19 08:51:10 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If everything was working when you installed the new aerial then touching it shouldn't cause complete loss of signal. This symptom suggests a wobbly something and you moving it has caused the wobbly bit to fail. Have a look at the junction box where the cable is connected. It's more than likely that one of the wires has come loose, or that they're intermittently shorting. Check the co-axial plug at the tv end for securty of connection too. Take care that the cable briad isn't shorting against the core conductor.

How do you signal that you want to back into a parallel parking place ?
Q. How do you signal your intentions to the driver directly behind you, so that person will give you enough room to back up? I've seen situations in which traffic is moving very slowly ---less than 1 or 2 mph. I'll call the vehicle trying to park, "A", and the vehicle directly behind it, I'll call"B"... "B" pulls right up behind "A" before "A" 's backup lights come on, making it impossible for "A" to back into the parking place. I've seen this problem at its worst in tourist areas---Carmel, CA,... Lake Placid, NY...Maybe there is no answer to this problem. Maybe what we need is a popup sign reading "please give me enough room to back into this parking place"

A. Pull over and block half the parking space with your car, come to a full stop, and put your directional signal on. If necessary, open your window and wave for him to pass you.

A. It will be pretty complicated. The main difference is the turn signal switch in the steering column. This is what seperates the front turn signal circuit from the rear circuit on a vehicle with brake/turn being the same bulb. On yours with the seperate rear signal bulb, your signal switch does not seperate the circuit from the front and rear (they are connected together) so what you want to do cannot be done. If your really good and want to go through all the trouble, you may be able to modify your existing signal switch, but I would doubt it. Buy the kit and be done with it. Why does a plug in signal booster interfere with my Sky signal?
Q. In order to watch one channel and record another after the digital switch over, I got a set top box. The digi signal isn't great here so I also got a plug in signal booster. It does its job for the digi, but for some reason I get a poorer quality picture from satellite now. It's definitely the signal booster causing it. The booster is 3 feet from the Sky receiver so how can it be interfering?
Asked by Rust Bunny - Sat Jan 12 18:56:12 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you are selecting the Sky box by using the Sky box's native UHF channel (ch 36 or 38 usually) instead of a SCART connection then the problem could simply be that the booster is causing the rest of the UHF channels to overwhelm it. If you are using the SCART connection from your Sky box you still be aware that it also outputs on a UHF (for older tvs that don't have SCARTs). The booster could still be interfering with the Sky box internal modulator. A 3' gap may not be enough if they are sharing the same aerial wire. Boosters are not good things for digital television. Most of the cheaper ones (cheap = anything under 50 in this case) are poorly desinged and built. They spew out rf interference. They are bad at filtering incoming… [cont.]

What is the signal to noise of a MRI image?
Q. I have a MRI image of a water bottle with air around it. The water is homogeneous. These are "modulus" scans. The air which should give a signal of zero (and noise) gives only positive values. Thus the noise itself seems to have a "signal" and noise. How do I calculate the SNR (signal to noise ratio) of the water? Thanks.
Asked by Peter R - Tue Jan 23 17:32:06 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Dear Peter, Are you looking at the envelope of your NMRI or at a rectified signal. Compare the Noise(air) amplitude with the Water amplitude to get the SNR. and take logs *10 to get it in dB's It is best to look at the output on an oscillograph rather than a meter as this will give you a better 'feeling' for what is going on! Modify your answer to describe your setup and readings, so people can give you a better answer!

A. You have a bad ground. Check the lamp grounds, at the core support and under the back near the taillights. Could also be a ground connection in one of the sockets. The current is "searching" for a ground and back feeding though the lamp filament back to the effected circuit.~Dan

A. Could be the flasher or switch. Most likely a flasher. If it's a flasher it'll cost you probably 20 bucks, switch, depends on vehicle, but a couple hundred normally.

Q. I was back to home town and drive for 5 hours..the lights is still ok. But suddenly when it near to reach home, i realise no sound (tik tok, tik tok) and no light. I stop at a road side and check, the break signal is ok, front light also ok..only the emergency light and signal is not working.

How can I get a better mobile phone signal in a caravan site in woodland?
Q. A friend has a caravan set in a woodland, not anywhere rural but still has problems getting a signal. The weather conditions seem to interfere a lot but they need to keep in contact with an elderly relative in case of emergencies. Is there anything that can help boost the signal?

A. not really.. it all depends on the distance you are from repeater tower on your network. ask around area to find out if anybody gets a better signal from a different network.
